How to Weatherproof Your Interior
One thing every homeowner and even apartment dweller should know is how to weatherproof the home. This is important because proper weatherproofing helps save money on utility bills by keeping the temperature inside as consistent as possible. In the winter, cold air doesn't seep into your home and make your heater work harder. In the summer, your home stays cooler because of the lack of hot air coming in from outside. Monetary savings aside, weatherproofing also makes your home more comfortable to live in. It is easier than you think to weatherproof your dwelling.
First, perform a thorough inspection of the home. There are energy auditors who do this for a living and tell you where you need to fill cracks and holes. Most often, air seeps in around doors, windows, and electrical outlets. It may also enter through poorly insulated basements and attics. It might be helpful to take a notepad around the house with you and mark down any areas that need work. Make sure to check inside your cabinets and behind your stove, as sometimes these areas have holes where both rodents and outside air can enter.
Once you've mapped out what needs to be taken care of, gather your supplies. You may need one or more types of caulk depending on the application. For example, caulk used in the bathroom should be waterproof and made for the bathroom. There is foam that can be sprayed in holes which expands to fill them then gets hard, making it impossible for air or critters to get inside. You can use weatherstripping along doors, windows and around outlets where air seeps in. For windows, consider plastic sheeting if the windows are older and not well insulated.
Speaking of insulation, one part of how to weatherproof your interior may be adding more insulation under the floor where the basement is and in the attic. This can help a great deal when it comes to hot or cold air getting in this way. While you can hire a professional to come in and prepare your home for the weather, this is a task that most people can easily do themselves in the course of a day or less. All the necessary supplies should be available at any hardware or home improvement store. Not only are the supplies inexpensive, you will save on heating and cooling after weatherproofing your home.
