The Basics of Weatherproofing
It is crucial to make your home weather resistant in all seasons. Weatherproofing your interior keeps warm air inside when it is cold outdoors, and cool air inside when it is hot outdoors. As a result, you stay more comfortable and save money on heating and cooling costs. The best part is, it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to weatherproof your home. Most anyone can do it, and the supplies are readily available at many stores, especially home improvement and hardware stores. The first thing to do is evaluate your home and see where there are cracks and air leaks. There are actually energy auditors who can come in and evaluate where your home needs improvement.
There are two fundamental products you need when making your home weather resistant. You will need caulk, which comes in many different varieties, and weatherstripping. When choosing caulk, think of the application. For holes found behind stoves and cabinets, there is caulk that expands to fill the space. There is caulk perfect for lining the areas around the tub, toilet and bathroom flooring. There is also caulk made for use with wood and other materials. For doors and windows, weatherstripping is ideal. It is adhesive on one side and features insulation on the other.
Weatherstripping gives an extra layer of protection to doors and windows. It helps prevent air leakage if applied correctly. Some people actually cover their windows with sheets of plastic to keep unwanted air out. This is a good idea especially for windows in which air conditioners are installed. In a pinch, a black garbage bag can be cut and used to seal the area. The actual sheeting made for this purpose is also sold in hardware and home improvement stores in different sizes.
If you experience leaks during heavy rains, it is crucial to identify the source of the leak. Depending on where the water is coming from, you may need to do some renovations. For roof leaks, the area can be patched or the roof replaced. If you find that even after weatherproofing you are getting cold air seepage under the front door, consider a decorative draft stopper that insulates this area and enhances your décor at the same time. There are many ways to keep the temperature inside your home where you want it.
